The Ricetto in Candelo
Built by the local peasant community, without any feudal intervention, in ancient times the Ricetto had to provide stable protection to the most precious things such as the products of the earth, such as grains and wine.
Only in extreme cases of danger, and for a short time, the population also took refuge there.
The shelter has a pseudo-pentagonal plan with an area of about 13,000 square meters and is surrounded by defensive walls built with stream pebbles placed in a “herringbone” shape (opus spicatum); at the corners four round towers ensured the defense and, in the middle of the north side, a square curtain tower.
The Ricetto is not just a static monument but a dynamic system open around the theme of viticulture: architectural artifacts, wine cellars, historical and environmental offshoots constitute an integrated system of connected realities.
